| Hey guys... I can get dismissed for this... |
[Nov. 14th, 2008|04:14 pm] |
On Thursday, I reported for duty at a school that I sub at fairly frequently. Once I finished with all the paperwork (signing in, receiving my assignments/schedule), the secretary takes me aside and lays this on me. "Some of the students in E's class (5th grade) complained to their parents that you wrote a good list/bad list with names on the board, and they were upset."
There are many things wrong with this. The first of which is, how is this wrong? How is this any different from the red-yellow-green light chart of behavior, (green being good behavior, red meaning trouble) or anything like that, which is in every classroom?
The second is...IT NEVER HAPPENED!
I went to talk to E to tell my side of the story. What the little buggers forgot was that there was a para in the room, who completely backed me up. The teacher turned apocalyptic with anger. She asked me how I wished to handle it, and I ended up having a little chat with the class on the dangers of lying, and told them in so many words, "Cut that s*** out"
As I walked out of the room nearly shaking, I heard the teacher start with "I hope you realize how dumb that was, and how much trouble you could have gotten S in."
Of course, no one would cop to it.... The little buggers. All this from a class where they cringe when I walk in because they know they will do some work when I'm there, which I suspect was the true basis of their complaints. |

| [ | mood |
| | tired | ] | Through some shady back room dealing, I was accepted into the student teaching program, despite my (lack of) grades. I'm back at PS 235 in lovely downtown Crown Heights Brooklyn. My cooperating teacher and I are the only white faces in the classroom, though I do have one girl who is mixed (French dan, black mom).
They are a very smart class, the tops in second grade. For a majority of them, they simply don't know how to shut up, or to mind their own business. I feel for the 4 or 5 kids who are the best behaved and always doing their work. I'm looking forward to working with them more, as it gets later into the semester. Now if I could only remember their names... |

| | busy | ] | 5 days ago, we buried my grandfather. Even now, it doesn't seem real. I haven't really had time to mourn fully, with finals and everything associated with that on the horizon. I haven't let myself have a complete crying breakdown yet, but I'm sure it will happen at some point.
At the chapel service, they had a private viewing for the family. It was so hard for me to look, yet, I knew that I would regret it if I didn't. It was the best that he'd looked since he was diagnosed, so I'm thankful for that.
Unfortunately, while taking the LAST exam the next morning, I kept having visions of my grandfather inside the coffin. I hope the results of the exam don't reflect negatively on my distracted mind.
That's all for now. Typing this is depressing me, and I've been in a better mood for the last day or so, so I don't want to ruin that. |

| | drained | ] | I'm so not looking forward to 9.45 -12.30 on Friday. As we get closer and closer to that time, it seems less and less real. I'm especially not looking forward to the "tradition" of dumping dirt on the coffin.
But on the bright side, at least they'll be whitefish and bagels aterwards. |

| | crushed | ] | My grandfather lost his struggle today. He was 73 years old. I don't think that anything that I could write here could do him justice, so I'll just leave it at that. |

| I've returned.... for now. |
[Dec. 4th, 2006|05:06 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | sad | ] | I arrived back safely from Florida this morning, about 2 hours earlier than expected thanks to some crafty working from friendly res agents. I landed only to find out that I'm going to have to return to Florida soon.
The doc told my grandparents that they can't do anything more for my grandfather b/c he's too weak to accept treatments. All further tratments have been stopped, and he will be on home hospice care until....
They gave him anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks.
While I was in Florida, I said what I needed to. I knew it was going to be a goodbye trip. (and that's not my eternal pessimism talking either.) Right now I am just numb, and I will remain that way until at least Saturday morning when I have to take one of the bigger tests of my life.
Hugs to all. Take a moment tonight to hug a parent, or in the case of those too far away to hug them, give them a call. It will make you feel better. |
